Mode of Action

The active ingredient, mesotrione, has a novel mode of action and is based on a naturally occurring compound produced by the bottlebrush plant (Callistemon citrinis).

Tenacity™ is absorbed by plants through the roots, shoots, and leaves and distributed throughout the plant by both xylem and phloem translocation. Within 24 hours after a post-emergence application, up to 70% of the applied Tenacity is translocated throughout the plant from the site of absorption. Foliar symptoms appear in sensitive weed species in five to seven days as bleaching of the new growth. Newly germinated weed species absorb Tenacity through the roots and shoots. Weeds fail to emerge or die shortly after emergence. Tolerant turfgrass species quickly metabolize Tenacity and are unaffected.

Tenacity is a HPPD (p-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase) inhibitor that prevents formation of carotenoids in susceptible plant species. Without carotenoids, light energy and by-products of photosynthesis destroy chlorophyll and cell membranes resulting in bleaching of leaves followed by necrosis and death of the plant.
